Itinerary 1945-1992

 

Day 1   Your coach will pick up your party at School and drive to Dover for the short Channel crossing to Calais, with ample time for a meal on board.  Then continue overnight across France, Belgium, Netherlands and Germany.

 

Day 2   After a breakfast stop at a convenient services, visit the former border to the south of the autobahn, where many of the frontier fences, walls and watch-towers are preserved.  This is followed by a guided visit to the former East German entry point for vehicles headed to Berlin and onwards to Poland and Czechoslovakia.  You arrive in Berlin early afternoon to check in at your accommodation.  Then it's time for hot lunch.  Although your coach may not be used again today, you may wish to use the excellent public transport system to visit the shopping area around the Europa Centre and the Kurfürstendamm.

 

Day 3   Your English-speaking guide joins you at your hotel to conduct you on an introductory coach tour of the main highlights of the city, including the Reichstag, Brandenburg Gate, Unter den Linden and the remains of the Wall.

After lunch, a local expert guide will conduct your visit to the former NKVD and Stasi prison.

 

Day 4   This morning you have a guided  visit of the former headquarters of the Stasi.

In the afternoon, you have a guided visit to the German-Russian Museum which contains the room in which the German armed forces surrendered to the Allies in 1945.  The museum relates the brutal conflict on the eastern front between two totalitarian states which contained many of the seeds of the Cold War which was to follow.

 

Day 5   Morning guided visit to the exhibition The Road to German Democracy, concentrating upon the period of two German states.  This is followed by a visit to the GDR Museum which tells the story of everyday life in the "workers' paradise".

Then join your coach for the return overnight journey to Calais.

 

Day 6   An early ferry, with time for breakfast on board, brings you to Dover and then your coach will return you to School.
